This book follows a curmudgeon of a man named Ove. He is labeled the bitter neighbor from hell. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But when a new family moves into the neighborhood, they take an interest in Ove after he offers a helping hand (however Ove didnโ€™t see the interaction this way). Now they just wonโ€™t leave him alone. With time Ove finally warms up to them and the sad story heโ€™s been concealing is finally made known.

Have you ever seen the Disney Movie, โ€œUpโ€ and thought to yourself โ€œthey should make a movie/book about the relationship that had occurred within the first 5 minutes of the movieโ€?

Well, THIS IS IT.

An awkward man falls for a woman who brings out the best in him and helps him see the good things in life. Then an event occurs where they realize they are unable to bear children. Then down the line, she passes away sooner than he does. Now heโ€™s left alone to his own devices.

Did you cry during the first 5 minutes of that film? Well I did and if you cried too then grab the tissues because Backman is going to have you ugly crying by the end of the book.

Of course thereโ€™s so much more to this book.

Every character in the neighborhood setting plays a role in Oveโ€™s story. How Backman is able to tie in each person is seamless and heartwarming.

Oveโ€™s story has dark themes that Backman handles with care (Please see trigger warnings prior to picking this up). But also with that he is able to weave in some comedy without being disrespectful in any way to any of the darker themes previously mentioned.

Now the main star of this book in my opinion is the friendship that develops between Ove and his new Iranian neighbor, Parvaneh. When they initially meet each other, Ove speaks to her and her family just like he would anyone else in his neighborhood, like idiots. But the way Parvaneh matches his energy and humbles him in a way was a sight to see.

Watching their relationship grow from friendship to a sort of father-daughter relationship was so sweet and rewarding especially after you learn more about Oveโ€™s past.

You canโ€™t help but root for him. Itโ€™s never too late to build lasting relationships and live life. If you give up now, you wonโ€™t know what youโ€™ll be missing down the line.

I 1000% recommend this book to everyone.
